Stem Cell (Exosome) Treatment for Hair Loss

What Does Stem Cell Treatment for Hair Mean?

In everyday use, the phrase ‘stem cell treatment’ for hair loss mostly refers not to an actual stem cell transplant but to the application of exosome- or growth factor-containing products to the scalp. Exosomes are very small vesicles that cells release to communicate with each other, carrying protein and genetic signaling molecules.

It is thought that exosomes obtained from stem cells in a laboratory setting may support repair and renewal signals in the area where the hair follicles are located. Procedures using cells obtained from a person’s own tissue are separate and less common methods.

Some of the products marketed as stem cell products contain plant stem cell extracts. For this reason, what matters more than the name of the procedure is what the product actually contains and where it comes from.

Level of Evidence and Realistic Expectations

Although studies on exosome- and growth factor-containing hair treatments are promising, they are still limited in number and the evidence is developing. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to clarify effectiveness, safety, the ideal dose and the number of sessions.

For this reason, these procedures do not replace treatments aimed at the cause of hair loss; in suitable people they are considered as a supportive option, with expectations discussed openly. The content and source of the products are also important when choosing.

Who Can It Be Considered For?

  • People with early- and mid-stage hair thinning
  • Those whose underlying deficiencies have been corrected and who want additional support alongside medical treatments
  • Those looking for an alternative or complement to hair mesotherapy or PRP
  • People who can decide knowing the level of evidence and with realistic expectations

This procedure is not recommended on its own in people whose underlying iron, vitamin, thyroid or hormonal problems have not been addressed; an evaluation aimed at the cause is done first.

How Is the Treatment Performed, and What to Keep in Mind Afterward

  1. The scalp is cleaned; numbing cream is applied if needed.
  2. The exosome-containing product is injected into the thinning areas with fine needles or applied to the scalp after microneedling.
  3. The hair is not washed on the day of treatment; for the first 24 hours, hair products, saunas and intense exercise are avoided.
  4. Results are assessed after a few months, taking the hair cycle into account.

Exosome treatments can be combined with microneedling or hair PRP within the same plan. Which combination is suitable is decided according to the type of hair loss and the response to previous treatments.

Possible Side Effects and Who Should Not Have It

Mild pain, redness, tenderness, swelling and, rarely, bruising may occur. Because long-term safety data are still limited, this is also shared with the patient during the decision-making process.

The procedure is not performed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, if there is an active infection or wound on the scalp, with an active cancer or cancer treatment, in bleeding disorders and in uncontrolled chronic diseases.

Dr. Fulya Koç’s Approach

Dr. Fulya Koç regards transparency as the foundation of treatment. She explains openly that exosome treatments are a scientifically developing field; she first investigates the cause of the hair loss and plans this procedure only for people considered suitable, by shared decision.

The aim of this approach is not to recommend a procedure because it is new and popular, but to consider together, in light of current scientific knowledge, the options that can genuinely contribute to the person’s needs.

Frequently asked questions

Most procedures known by this name contain not the stem cells themselves but exosomes or growth factors obtained from stem cells. Information about the product to be used is given before the procedure.

Early studies suggest it may contribute to hair density; however, the evidence is still limited. The same response is not expected in everyone, and the procedure does not replace treatment aimed at the cause.

PRP is prepared from your own blood and contains your own growth factors. Exosome products contain vesicles prepared in a laboratory that carry signals between cells. For now, the level of evidence for PRP in hair loss is greater.

The information on this page is general. Whether the treatment suits you, its possible risks and the results you can expect are assessed individually at your consultation. Results vary from person to person. Image is illustrative.
