What Is Hand Filler?
The hands are one of the areas that receive less care than the face but reveal age the most. Over the years, the fat tissue on the back of the hand thins, and the skin also thins and loses its elasticity. As a result, the veins, tendons and bony ridges become more prominent, and the back of the hand can look hollow.
Hand filler is the support of lost volume by applying hyaluronic acid to the back of the hand. In this way, the look of veins and tendons softens, and the back of the hand may gain a fuller, more rested appearance. In hand rejuvenation, filler is often planned together with treatments that target skin quality and spots.
Because the skin on the back of the hand is thin and the hands are in motion all day, it is important to choose a filler with suitable flexibility for this area. Even distribution of the filler helps the hand look natural both at rest and in motion. In the assessment at the Ataşehir clinic, the harmony of the hands with the face and overall skin structure is also taken into account.
Who Is It Suitable For?
- People with age-related volume loss and hollowing on the back of the hand
- Those whose veins and tendons have become visibly prominent
- Those who notice thinning of the hands after weight loss
- Those who want to balance the look of the hands with facial rejuvenation treatments
- Those who are starting to notice thinning and crepiness in the skin on the back of the hand
If there are complaints such as pain, swelling, joint problems or circulation disorders in the hands, these conditions need to be assessed first.
How Is the Treatment Done?
- Volume loss on the back of the hand, skin quality, spots and vein structure are assessed.
- The area is disinfected and numbing cream is applied for comfort.
- The filler is usually applied through a few points, most often with a cannula, spread into the suitable layer of the back of the hand.
- The filler is gently shaped so that it is evenly distributed across the back of the hand. The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes.
What Should You Pay Attention to Afterward?
- On the first day, keeping your hands above heart level and applying cold compresses may reduce swelling.
- For the first 24–48 hours, avoid heavy lifting, intensive manual work and heavy exercise.
- Taking off rings and bracelets until the swelling passes will keep you more comfortable.
- For the first 48 hours, avoid saunas, steam baths and contact with very hot water.
- Protecting your hands from the sun is important for the long-term look of both the filler and the skin.
Possible Side Effects and Who Should Not Have It
Swelling, bruising and tenderness may occur on the back of the hand; swelling can last a little longer here than on the face and usually decreases within a few days to a week. In the first days you may feel mild tightness when making a fist. Rarely, small lumps that can be felt or irregularities may be seen.
As with every filler, infection and vessel-related complications, although rare, can also develop with hand treatments. If you notice increasing pain, marked redness, warmth or color change, you should contact your doctor.
The treatment is not performed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, if there is an active infection or wound on the hands, or if there is an allergy to a filler ingredient.
Dr. Fulya Koç’s Approach
Dr. Fulya Koç does not limit age management to the face. In someone whose face looks rejuvenated but whose hands look tired, a light amount of support to the hands can bring balance to the overall appearance. The aim is not to make the hands look different from what they are, but to give them a well-kept look in harmony with the face.
In hand rejuvenation, filler is not a solution on its own. Sun protection, spot treatment and treatments that support the skin’s own collagen production are considered together as part of the long-term plan. In this way, both today’s appearance and the health of the hands over the years are taken into account.
