Carbon Peel

What Is Carbon Peel?

Carbon peel is a skin rejuvenation treatment in which a thin layer of carbon-based lotion is applied to the skin and then broken up with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The carbon particles settle into the pores and absorb the laser energy; as they are removed together with the laser, a mild peeling effect occurs on the top layer of the skin.

The heat effect of the laser helps temporarily reduce oil gland activity and gently stimulate collagen production. For this reason, carbon peel is especially preferred for oily skin with visible pores.

Because carbon peel acts on the surface, recovery time is short, and most people can return to daily life the same day. However, for concerns such as deep wrinkles, pronounced acne scars or heavy pigmentation, it has only a limited effect on its own; in these cases it can be planned together with other methods.

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • People with oily skin and visible pores
  • Those prone to blackheads and mild acne
  • Those whose skin tone looks dull and lackluster
  • People with mild, superficial uneven tone
  • Those looking for a treatment with a short recovery time before a special occasion

How Is the Procedure Performed?

  1. The skin is cleansed of makeup and dirt.
  2. The carbon lotion is applied to the face in a thin layer and left to dry.
  3. Eye protection is put on; the laser is passed over the carbon layer to remove the particles.
  4. If needed, a second pass targets skin texture; then a moisturizer and sunscreen are applied.

During the procedure you feel mild warmth, crackling and tingling; for most people anesthesia is not needed. After the session the skin usually looks cleaner, more matte and more vibrant.

What to Pay Attention to Afterward

  • Do not use peeling products that irritate the skin on the same day.
  • It is recommended to pause retinol and acid-containing products for a few days.
  • Use sunscreen regularly and in sufficient quantity.
  • Avoid hot environments such as saunas and steam rooms on the first day.
  • Moisturize the skin, and do not rub it if mild dryness occurs.

Between sessions, it is recommended to use products that do not disrupt the skin’s oil balance or clog pores. Because frequent, harsh peeling can irritate the skin and increase oiliness, home care is kept simple.

Possible Side Effects and Who Should Not Have It

Mild redness, a feeling of warmth and short-lived dryness may occur; these mostly resolve within a few hours to a day. Rarely, temporary color changes or sensitivity may develop.

The treatment is postponed or not performed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, if there is an active infection, cold sore or open wound, when taking photosensitizing medication, after recent intense tanning and in some skin conditions.

In heat-triggered pigmentation such as melasma and in very sensitive skin, the settings are chosen carefully; if needed, a different method is preferred.

Dr. Fulya Koç’s Approach

Dr. Fulya Koç positions carbon peel as a supportive step within the skin’s overall care plan. Factors behind oiliness and pore concerns, such as hormonal causes, diet or care habits, are also evaluated; the goal is for the skin to stay balanced in the long term.

When sessions are supported by a suitable cleansing and moisturizing routine that preserves the oil balance, the effect may be maintained for longer. For this reason, home care recommendations are also shared in detail during the treatment.

Frequently asked questions

The pronounced peeling seen with chemical peels does not usually occur. Some people may notice mild dryness or fine flaking for a few days.

It may be supportive for a tendency toward mild acne and oiliness, but it is not enough on its own for moderate and severe acne. In that case it is more appropriate to plan it together with medical acne treatment.

Because it is a superficial treatment, it can also be done in the summer months with regular sun protection. On heavily tanned skin, it is recommended to postpone it to reduce the risk of color changes.
